উপনিবেশ বিরোধী চর্চা৯ - উপনিবেশের জ্ঞান চুরি এবং প্রকৃতির ওপর প্রভুত্ব - ভারতের গুটি বসন্তর টিকার জ্ঞান হরণ

উনবিংশ শতকে ব্রিটেন যত শিল্প আর বৈজ্ঞানিক আবিষ্কার করেছে, সেই আবিষ্কারের এই পর্যায়ে গিয়ে, সে এই পর্যায়ে পৌঁছনোর বিস্তৃত ধাপগুলি অন্যে যাতে কেউ জানতে না পারে তার জন্যে সে সেই নথিকরণগুলি ধ্বংস করে ফেলেছে। পূর্ব দেশগুলির সেই বৈজ্ঞানিক আবিষ্কারের নানান পূর্ব উদাহরণ অস্বীকার বা খাটো করার চেষ্টা করে গিয়েছে। আজ দেখেশুনে মনে হয় পশ্চিমি বিজ্ঞান আর ঔপনিবেশিক প্রযুক্তির যেন পূর্ব ইতিহাস নেই, সে যেন এক একক এবং স্বয়ম্ভু।

ব্রিটেন ১৭২১এর ভেরিওলেশন শুরু হওয়ার পর থেকে ১৮৪০এর সেটি নিষদ্ধ করা পর্যন্ত ব্রিটেন দীর্ঘ সময় পার করেছে। ১৮৩০ সাল নানান কেন্দ্রাভিমুখী কারণের জন্যে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। লুঠেরা শিল্প বিপ্লব এবং বড় পুঁজির আধুনিক বিজ্ঞান তাকে বিশ্বের বহুদেশকে উপনিবেশ বানাবার হাতিয়ার একই সঙ্গে পুরনো বিশ্বকে জয় করার(নতুন বিশ্ব হলে তো সেটুকুরও প্রয়োজন হত না) তাত্ত্বিক অজুহাতও তুলে দিয়েছিল। ১৭৫৭র পরে তারা আস্তে আস্তে পুরনো মুঘল সাম্রাজ্যের প্রশাসনকে বুঝতে চেয়েছে, কিছুটা আত্মীকরণ করতে চেয়েছে, তাড়াহুড়ো না করে ধীরে ধীরে নতুন পরিবর্তন আনতে চেয়েছে। এই পর্যায়টি হঠতই শেষ হয়ে যায় ১৮৩৫ সালে পার্সিকে সরিয়ে দিয়ে ইংরেজি ভাষা সরকারি ভাষ গ্রহনের মাধ্যমে।

১৮৩৭ সালে বেঙ্গল ক্যাভালরি অফিসার ক্যাপ্টেন জেমস ম্যাকেঞ্জিকে ভারত-ইংলন্ডের মধ্যে মিশর আর আরবের মধ্যে দিয়ে স্থায়ীভাবে বাষ্পপোত চালাবার সমীক্ষা করতে নির্দেশ দেওয়া হয়। ম্যাকেঞ্জি উত্তরে লেখেন, It seems to be a law of nature that the civilized nations should conquer and possess the countries in a state of barbarianism and by such means, however unjustifiable it may appear at first, extend the blessings of knowledge, industry and commerce among people hitherto sunk in the most gloomy depths of superstitious ignorance। এটা ভাবা দরকার কিভাবে বাষ্পপোত চালাবার প্রাযুক্তিক আর অর্থনৈতিক বাধ্যবাধকতায় সভ্যতার দায়ভারের মত সাম্রাজ্যবাদী শব্দগুলো ব্যবহার করতে হল। আর এখানে law of nature প্রাকৃতিক আইনের দোহাই দিয়ে উপনিবেশ তৈরির ন্যায্যতা প্রতিপাদন করতে হয় প্রতি পদে।
