মুঘল মানচিত্রবিদ্যা - জাহাঙ্গির শাহআব্বাসের আলিঙ্গন

যে গোলকের ওপর ওঁরা দাঁড়িয়ে আছেন সেটি বিশ্বের মানচিত্র এবং দুজনের পিছনে যে গোল আলোর বৃত্তটার মত একটা কিছু দেখা যাচ্ছে, সেটা আদতে উপমহাদেশের মানচিত্র। সেটি খুঁটিয়ে দেখে নদীগুলির সঠক স্থান বোঝা যায়। ছবিটা এঁকেছেন আবুল হাসান ১৬১৫ সনে। এরও দেড়শ বছর পরে এই জ্ঞান অবলম্বন করে রেনেল মানচিত্র তৈরির উদ্যম নেবেন।

Mughal technical interest extended into cartography as well. Very few maps from the Mughal period exist, but other sources point to a sophisticated cartographic tradition. For instance, the globe in the famous painting Jahangir Embracing Shah Abbas reveals a familiarity with European maps of the early seventeenth century which was combined with Mughal geographical knowledge. The latter is revealed by the accurate depiction of the river systems of the subcontinent.
