মুঘল দরবারের মুন্সি৯- চন্দ্র ভান ব্রাহ্মণ - উপনিবেশপূর্ব ইতিহাসকে কেন নতুন ভাষ্যে লিখতে হবে

চন্দ্র ভানের লেখায় মুঘল দরবারের নানান বৌদ্ধিক পরিবেশের বিশদ বর্ণনা পাই। চাহার চমনএর প্রথম দিকে এই ধরণের একটা উদাহরণ আছে।

শাহজাহানের রাজত্বের ত্রিশ বছরের মাঝামাঝি সময়ে ১৬৪৪ সালের মার্চ মাসে জাহানারা বেগম ওরফে বেগম সাহেবার পরিধেয় প্রদীপের আলোয় জ্বলে ওঠে এবং বেগম পুড়ে যান। জাহানারা খুব সাধারণ রাজ্ঞী ছিলেন না, তিনি দরবারের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ ছিলেন, বিদ্বানদের পৃষ্ঠপোষণা করতেন, নিজেও বিদুষী ছিলেন। কাদিরী এবং চিস্তি সুফিদের অন্যতম পৃষ্ঠপোষক ছিলেন। ১৬৩১ সালে তাঁর মা মুমুতাজ মহল মারা যাওয়ার পরে তিনিই তাঁর মায়ের স্থান নেন এবং অনন্য ব্যক্তিত্বে পরিণত হন রাজকীয় নানান দায়িত্ব কাঁধে নিয়ে। ফলে জাহানারার দুর্ঘটনা দরবারের প্রায় প্রত্যেকটি সদস্যের কাছে নিদারুণ দুঃসংবাদ বয়ে নিয়ে আসে। যেভাবে তিনি পুড়ে গিয়েছিলেন, তাতে দরবারিদের সঙ্গে সম্রাটেরও মনে হয়েছিল সাম্রাজ্ঞীর জীবন সংশয় অবশ্যম্ভাবী।

সাম্রাজ্ঞীর জীবন সংশয়য়ের ঘটনাটা চন্দ্র ভান লিখছেন তাঁর অননুকরণীয় সাহত্যিক শৈলীতে। এতে শুধু যে সাম্রাজ্ঞীর প্রতি তার নিজস্ব প্রশস্তি ফুটে উঠেছে তাই নয়, তিনি দার্শনিকভাবে দেখছেন ভাগ্য পরিবর্তনে মরণশীল মানবের ন্যুনতা। In those days when the victorious flags and triumphal standards and conquering imperial banners as high as the sky were majestically encamped in the seat of the

caliphate Akbarabad [i.e., Agra], by the force of fate and destiny—the mysteries of which are concealed and veiled even from the eyes of men of vision—on one of the nights in the month of Farwardin a stray spark from a lamp ignited the hallowed skirt of that nawāb of blessed title, the empress of the age, a Rabi‘a in character and a Maryam in manner, the Zubaida of contemporary women, the grand dame of the times renowned throughout the world, [Princess Jahan Ara] Begum Sahib, whose dress was so like an ornament in paradise that it pulled a veil over the face of heavenly nymphs [hūrān-i bihishtī], and whose veil of honor and curtain of dignity [muhajjaba-i ‘izzat wa haudaj-i rif‘at] cast a shadow even over the world-illumining sun.

এখান থেকে চন্দ্র ভান বিস্তৃতভাবে বলেছেন কি করে দীর্ঘকাল ধরে ক্ষতের সঙ্গে লড়াই করলেন সাম্রাজ্ঞী, তাঁর মনের জোর(তিনি লিখছেন an agony so severe that merely describing it makes my pen tremble like a willow tree) ইত্যাদি। এছাড়াও বলছেন, সম্রাট নিজে সাম্রাজ্ঞীর সেরে ওঠার নজরদারি করছেন। চন্দ্র ভানের লেখায় স্পর্শকাতর সম্রাটের যে অন্তরঙ্গতার কোমল ভাবটি ফুটে উঠেছে, সেটি অন্য কোন বর্ণনায় পাওয়া যায় না - His Majesty’s mind was so distracted by care and concern for that blessed one’s condition that these folios don’t have space [to describe it]। তিনি লিখছেন “from the time of the accident’s occurrence right up to the day her infirmity receded, throughout the day and night he would give only one general audience in order to assuage the concerns of his subjects before again returning to attend to the treatment of that light in the eye of the sultanate।
