বাংলার ব্যবসা - কোন বন্দর থেকে কতগুলি জাহাজ - জাহাজের মালিকানা

১৬৮০ থেকে ১৭১৮র মধ্যে পারস্য উপসাগর আর লোহিত সাগরে যাওয়া ১০টার সব কটা জাহাজ হুগলি থেকেই ছেড়েছে। এই সময়ে সুরাটের দিকে যাওয়া ১০২টা জাহাজের মধ্যে ৯৪টা হুগলি থেকে ছেড়েছে। করমণ্ডল আর মালাবার উপকূলের দিকে গিয়েছে ১৩৮টা এবং ১২৯টা যথাক্রমে। বালেশ্বর থেকে মালাবারের একটাও জাহাজ ছাড়ে নি। শ্রীলংকায় ১৮টার মধ্যে ১৭টা জাহাজ বালেশ্বর থেকে গিয়েছে। 

দক্ষিণপূর্ব এশিয়ার দিকে যাওয়া ৫৩টার মধ্যে ২১টা হুগলি থেকে ৩২টা বালেশ্বর থেকে ছেড়েছে। মালদ্বীপে যাওয়া ৯১টা হাজাহের মধ্যে ২৭টা হুগলি থেকে ৬৪টা বালেশ্বর থেকে।
সুরাটের দিকে যাওয়া ২৬টা জাহাজের মালিকের নাম মিলেছে, ২৬টা গুজরাটিদের। করমণ্ডলের দিকে যাওয়া ৪৫টা জাহাজের মধ্যে তিনটে মালিক বাংলার। মালাবারের দিকে যাওয়া জাহাজের তিনিটির মালিকানা জানা গ্যাছে সব কটা মালাবারি সওদাগর আলি রাজার। ১৬৮০-১৬৮৪র মধ্যে বালেশ্বর থেকে শ্রীলঙ্কার দিকে যাওয়া ১৭টা হুগলি থেকে ছাড়া জাহাজের মধ্যে ১৫টা বাংলার ব্যবসায়ীর। বালেশ্বর আর হুগলি থেকে ছাড়া ৬৫টা জাহাজের মধ্যে ৬০তা বাংলার ব্যবসায়ীদের।

All ten ships that are known to have gone from Bengal to the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea between 1680 and 1718 started their voyage at Hugli. Of the 102 ships that went to Surat over the same period, 94 started out from this port. The corresponding figures for the Coromandel coast were 138 and 129, respectively. No ships are recorded as having left Balasore for the Malabar coast during this period. Of the total of 18 ships that are recorded as having left for Ceylon during 1680-1718, as many as 17 started out from Balasore (Bengal shipping lists in the Dutch records). Of the 53 ships that are known to have gone to Southeast Asia from Bengal during 1680-1718, 21 were from Hugli and 32 from Balasore. Of the 91 departures for the Maldive islands over the same period, 27 were from Hugli and the remaining 64 from Balasore (Bengal shipping lists).
For the period 1680-1718, information regarding the ownership and operation of vessels departing from Bengal for Gujarat is available for 26 vessels. As many as 23 of these vessels were on the account of Surat merchants, one on that of the king of Siam1 whereas only two were on the account of merchants based at Hugli. Of the 45 vessels departing for Coromandel for which information regarding ownership and operation is available, only three are known to have been owned by merchants based in Bengal. For Malabar, information regarding the place of domicile of the merchants is available only for the three vessels that left Hugli for this coast in 1713-1714. All these vessels were on the account of the Malabari merchant Ali Raza (Bengal shipping lists). Thus of the 17 vessels that left Balasore for Ceylon between 1680 and 1684, as many as 15 were on the account of Bengal merchants. As for the Maldive islands, information regarding the place of domicile of the merchants is available for 65 vessels that left Balasore and Hugli for these islands between 1680 and 1718. Of these vessels 60 were on the account of merchants based in Bengal (Bengal shipping lists).
