৪০০ বছর পর ১০ লক্ষটাকার কাছাকাছি দামে সেই কাঁথা নিলাম হয়

এই ধারাবাহিকের প্রথমটিতে লিখেছি এপ্রিলে লন্ডনে এই ধরণের কাঁথা সাড়ে ১০ হাজার পাউন্ডে বিক্রি হচ্ছে।তখন বিশ্ব কেন্দ্র ছিল উপমহাদেশ, উপমহাদেশের হৃদমাঝারে ছিল বাংলা। আজকের এশিয়ার অবস্থা ছিল তখন ইওরোপের। পলাশীপূর্ব বাংলা নিয়ে যে কোনও আলোচনায় এইটুকু মাথায় রাখবেন শুধু।

এক প্রখ্যাত বাঙালি আমলা দিন কয়েক আগে কলকাতায় জানিয়েছিলেন কাঁথার ঐতিহ্য নাকি খুব পুরোনো নয়। চর্যাপদ, সদুক্তকর্ণামৃত বা গীতিকবিতায় কাঁথার উল্লেখের কথা ছেড়েই দিচ্ছি, এই সেদিন ১৬০০ সালে হাঁটুর বয়সী লন্ডনে যখন পর্তুগিজদের নিয়ে যাওয়া বাঙলার মহিলাদের তৈরি কাঁথা বিপুল দামে নিলাম হচ্ছে, তখন তাঁর প্রাচীনত্ব দক্ষতা নিয়ে প্রশ্ন তোলা বাতুলতা।মুঘলদের কয়েক দশক আগে ভারতে আসা পর্তুগিজেরা কাঁথা নিয়ে বহুকাল, এই শতখানেক বছর আগেও বাংলায় বাণিজ্য করছিল। স্রেফ চিন্তাও করা যায় না ১৬০০ সালের প্রথম পাদে লন্ডনে বাংলার মহিলাদের বোনা কাঁথা ২০ পাউন্ড নিলামে দাম ওঠে। ১৮০০ সালে ৮০০ পাউন্ডে সারা বছর সত্যিকারের রাজার হালে থাকা যেত লন্ডনে, ২০ হাজার পাউন্ডে এমপি আসন কেনা যেত। এই বছরের এপ্রিলে ১০.৫ ডলার নিলামে বাংলার মায়েদের কাঁথা বিক্রি হল।

In the winter of 1618, a Bengal quilt 'embroidered all over with pictures of men and crafts in yellow silk' was auctioned for £20, causing the Company to write to their servants urging larger supplies 'stitched with birds, beasts or work very thick'. About 1620, a factor in Bengal promised joy to the London office from the gorgeous quilts he had acquired. A decade later Charles I permitted Company servants to trade lawfully in quilts embroidered with silk (suggesting a previously sanctioned traffic), and in the years to follow sums from £5 to £40 were spent by customers eager to own quilts and hangings 'imbroidered with sundry colours' or 'imbroidered upon Callicoe with sundrie silks'. At one such auction Alderman Corkaine bid more than £5 to acquire a 'callicoe hanginge imbroydered' despite the fact that it was also listed as 'somewhat defective and stayned', so intense was the acquisitive fervour.
