Caste connections helped the Nattukottai Chettiars, a major South Indian banking community, forge relations of trust which were indispensable for business transactions conducted over long distances. In the case of merchants in Benares in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Christopher Bayly has argued that “extended linkages of kinship and marriage, perceived by contemporary Indians and later commentators as ‘caste’, played a significant role in reinforcing the community of trust and mercantile intelligence which was essential to long-distance trading.” Mercantile activities were not shaped only by caste in Benares, however, and Bayly found that even tightly organized family firms placed deep faith in agents who were of different castes. The bulk of credit transactions were also conducted beyond the boundaries of kin and caste, which indicates that while caste facilitated some business activities, it was not, according to Bayly, “the prime parameter of mercantile organization.

...Alongside this credit market that catered to the East India Company and big Indian merchants, there existed a parallel credit system in which substantial sums of money were dispersed at zero or very low rates of interest. In Mughal India, such loans included taqavi (taccavi), which were advances from the state to peasant cultivators for the purchase of seed, cattle or investment in agricultural improvement. No interest appears to have been charged for these loans. Artisanal production in Mughal India also relied upon advances of money from merchants who did not charge interest, but demanded delivery of the product within a contracted period. Both forms of credit, again at no interest, were widespread in the eighteenth century and they were found in North India, Bengal and the South. While there are reports of very high interest rates for peasants from village moneylenders – one from eighteenth-century Bengal claimed 12.5% per month on loans for two to three months – the volume of these transactions is not known. However, interest-free loans in the form of taccavi and advances to artisans were sizable in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and were essential to the workings of both agriculture and manufacturing.

In early and mid-seventeenth-century Gujarat, the insurance premiums for the movement of goods on land ranged from 0.5 to 2.5%. The transport of cash by land could be insured at the rate of 1%. The costs of insuring on water ranged from 2 to 2.75%, with the lower rate for coastal shipping in 1622 and the higher for trade between Surat and the Persian Gulf in 1649. Insuring the coastal shipment of cash was more expensive and came to 4.5% in 1665. Habib has speculated that these low rates derived from widespread
use of insurance facilities, which reduced the risk attached to any individual transaction.

the growth rate of agricultural output was much lower than that of population during the British industrial revolution. The men, women and children of Britain relied upon increasing quantities of imported grain or in many cases from the late eighteenth century depressed their consumption of food. Many in Britain went hungry, especially during the very difficult decades of the 1790s, 1830s and 1840s. “If one asks how British agriculture fed the expanding population during the industrial revolution, the answer is – badly,” Robert Allen has concluded.
...Patrick O’Brien and Nicholas Crafts, in separate studies, estimated that consumption of manufactures by agriculturalists increased by 30 percent in the eighteenth century. In that period, manufacturing output increased threefold. After 1800 agriculture’s consumption of manufactures became even less important and urban and export markets were more important. Clearly more than agricultural improvement was necessary to meet the demand for the products of British industry

In the eighteenth century, the most economically advanced regions of the subcontinent were unique on the world stage in that they were major producers and exporters not only of manufactured goods, most critically cotton cloth, but also of foodgrain. South India, for instance, was famed in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries for its painted, printed and patterned cottons from Masulipatnam, Pulicat, Madras and other centers. In the seventeenth century, South India also routinely sent large quantities of rice across the Bay of Bengal to Southeast Asian emporia such as Malacca, Macassar and Aceh, to Ceylon and around the tip of India to food-deficit areas on the west coast, and even further west to Mocha and Bandar Abbas. In the eighteenth century, rice exports from the south declined, but were still sent periodically to Ceylon and to Southeast Asia. Bengal was famed throughout the world for its silk, fine muslins and other textiles, but was also well known in the Indian Ocean for its cheap rice, which was consumed in grain-deficit areas along both coasts of the subcontinent, Ceylon and Southeast Asia. And Gujarat exported not only cloth to the Persian Gulf and Red Sea in the eighteenth century but also rice, wheat and mung.
The surpluses that Indian agriculture generated suggest that agrarian institutions worked effectively. While the regime of property rights was not identical with that found in Europe, it extended sufficient security and stability for investment and sophisticated systems of production. Political institutions also contributed to the creation and maintenance of this highly productive agrarian order by financing improvement and investment through the institution of taccavi, a process which will be examined in greater detail shortly. Indian agricultural surpluses were also achieved without “sweating” labor, which stands in stark contrast to the general intensification of work in other economically advanced centers of Europe and Asia in the eighteenth century.

Society, Economy and the Market
Data on occupational distributions also point to the high agricultural productivity of the rice-growing regions in India. A 1775 survey of the area of Rangamati in Bengal reported that out of 256 households, only 101, or 39%, were cultivators. The remainder were scattered among a number of professions, the largest being officials (33 households), silkworm breeders (22), coolies (22), milkmen (17) and mendicants (13), but there were also cotton and silk weavers, smiths, oilpressers, shopkeepers and grocers, fishmongers, bamboo cutters
and a barber. A 1791 census of the village of Sibpur, also in Bengal, revealed that out of 419 Hindu households, only 106 (25%) were pure agriculturalists while 15% were artisans, 22% were fishermen and 21% were upper-caste gentry. While it is not known to what extent these local surveys are representative of Bengal as a whole, they do provide evidence of the diverse economic order and the substantial non-agricultural population in some areas in the eighteenth century.

Dry areas were prone to crop fluctuations, but harvest shortfalls were generally localized, at times confined to a network of a few dozen villages. Although dry zones were crisscrossed by trade routes – they were the source of raw cotton, for instance – transport costs limited the scale and scope of the trade in grain. To deal with this limitation, the inhabitants were used to being geographically mobile and traveled to places where grain supplies were abundant. Relying upon extensive intelligence networks, it was typical for peasants to leave areas of grain shortage and migrate to where it was plentiful. This strategy was supported by the political institutions of eighteenth-century India, most critically a political system that did not limit the mobility of peasants, artisans and others. Therefore, peasants and craftsmen were not hindered in their search for grain. In fact, they received incentives to move in the form of revenue concessions and even loans for investment, or taccavi, which also helped to hasten recovery after disasters

Jones pays little attention to the long security and stability of Bengal’s agriculture in the several decades before the late 1760s. Rather he assumes a “constant background of severe Asian famines.” Although droughts and food shortages were not unknown in Bengal, in the words of Rajat Datta, “nothing like 1769–70 had ever occurred in the province.” The crisis of those years was severe because of the unusually long drought that hit the western part of the region. From August 1769 to January 1770 not a drop of rain fell on the area and rice fields had so hardened that they were difficult to plow. The lack of water also destroyed crops that were essential for the work of Bengal’s artisans, including cotton and mulberry. The Bengal famine of 1769–70 may be labeled the first great famine of the colonial period, however, and the English East India Company’s response to the crisis deepened nature’s impact. The Company had just consolidated its rule in the region and it stringently collected revenue. Its collections at the height of the crisis, in the fiscal years of 1769–70 and 1770–1, were higher than those in 1765–6. Writing after the event, Warren Hastings, the great eighteenth-century Company man and administrator, acknowledged that the drought of 1769–70 caused so much misery because revenue collection was “violently kept up to its former standard.” This was combined with minimal relief efforts by the Company state, in contrast to pre-British political practices as well as to those of Indian commercial and political leaders, who organized food distribution on a massive scale. In the city of Murshidabad, the Company devoted 100,000 rupees for poor relief, while four rich residents of the city contributed 47,250 rupees. In the city of Patna, one wealthy individual spent 30,000 rupees to purchase and transport rice from Benaras for the hungry and destitute, and “in this manner,” according to a British account, “an immense multitude came to be rescued from the jaws of imminent death.” Such relief efforts were feasible because supplies of rice were plentiful in the region as a whole. The drought was confined to several districts of western Bengal while the rest of the province had bumper harvests.
Another failure of the Company state in Bengal was its reluctance to distribute taccavi, or advances of capital, to cultivators for the restoration of production systems after the drought and famine. “There was an insignificant amount of financial aid or taccavi provided to help the cultivators to begin production for the next agricultural season,” Rajat Datta has written.108 Support of this sort was a key obligation of pre-colonial states across the subcontinent and it was the duty of rulers to make extensive loans, typically at no interest as we have seen, for the maintenance and expansion of the agrarian order during good times and especially for the regeneration of that order after bad times. Agriculturalists used this money to obtain tools and equipment, restore irrigation systems, replenish cattle stocks and purchase seed.
Therefore, in contrast to Europe, states in the Indian subcontinent were intimately involved with investment and improvement in agriculture. The Company state, however, failed to operate with these Indian principles, which slowed the recovery from the disaster.
Taccavi and other forms of state support for agriculture made possible quick recoveries not only from famines but also from warfare and other disasters. Christopher Bayly has shown that the economy of eighteenth-century North India weathered war and political change because of the “movement of resources – capital, labour and skills – across the landscape” and the “flexibility and adaptability of the contemporary political economy.” Bayly argued that “the withdrawal of resources from some areas was often matched by their reinvestment elsewhere.” Therefore, the fluid and flexible political and economic institutions of the eighteenth century made the advanced regions of the subcontinent enormously resilient. The establishment of British rule destroyed many of these institutions, creating the brittle and crisis-prone system of the nineteenth century, which was not characteristic of the subcontinent in earlier eras.

In the Indian subcontinent, merchants engaged in careful calculations for their commercial transactions. Their methodical procedures were objectified in the form of sophisticated accounting techniques that even went beyond the recording of debits and credits in double-entry bookkeeping. According to Christopher Bayly, they “provided a map of the relationships between the family firm and the economy as a whole.” In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, manuals were written on the science of accountancy in northern India, which spread knowledge and practice of numeracy and calculation. These works, reflecting the syncretic culture of the region, drew upon the arithmetic and accounting systems of Hindu merchants and procedures from Iranian and Mughal sources and were composed in Persian. There is evidence that the keeping of accounts was not restricted to merchants.Weavers in eighteenth-century South India, for example, were well known for keeping a record on cadjans (palm leaves) of their transactions – which could be extremely complex as they included advances of cash from several merchants, purchases of materials such as yarn, oil, tools and equipment, sale prices for cloth, and so on. This suggests that numerical thinking and economic calculation may have diffused quite widely among South Indians, but the evidence for this is very difficult to recover from the surviving sources. Frank Perlin also argues that the plentiful material on the profusion of small value moneys provides evidence that market transactions were common and thus a market mentality was widespread.

স্টুয়ার্ট লিখছেন, forty-five books on different sciences were either compiled, or translated from different languages, under his immediate inspection or auspices।
I exhibited the following experiments, viz. head and wig, dancing images, electric stool, cotton fired, small receiver and stand, hemispheres, Archimedes’s screw, siphon, Tantalus’s cup, water-pump, condensing engine, &c. Captain Doveton was present, and explained, as I went on, to the Sultaun, who was giving an instance of his being acquainted with some of these experiments. He has shewn us a condensing engine made by himself, which spouted water higher than ours।

এই গ্রন্থাগার তৈরির মাধ্যমে তিনি created a configuration of institutions to facilitate the production and dissemination of new knowledge।

The importance of a positive sense of India goods on English terms can be seen in the English elite's adoption oflndian-style banyans and banyan gowns as well as furniture that they took to be Indian-style. Samuel Pepys, for instance, rented a banyan for his 1666 portrait. Banyans could be long loose robes, such as that worn by Pepys, or more tailored knee-length buttoned shirts. English people imported banyans ready-made from India or had them made in England from imported or domestic fabrics. The king and queen, for instance, hired Robert Croft and Mary Mandove as their personal "Indian Gown" makers.
The East India Company also imported growing quantities of cane, worked by an emerging group of craftsmen skilled in producing cane chairs with elegant spiral-turned wooden frames. Furniture makers often painted the wooden frames black to simulate Asian ebony, or "Japanned" them with lacquer and paint. Ebony and lacquere~ chests, tables, and desks, though often made in Japan and elsewhere in Asia, were generally imported from India and imitated in Europe to supply a growing fashion among the middling and upper sorts after the 1650s.
