Dhivar (Fisher) a shudra sub-caste. Fishing by occupation, dhivars are mentioned in Vrhaddharma Purana as one of two fishermen sub-castes along with Jalik. Brahmavaivarta Purana cites Dhivar and Kaivarta as asat (dishonest) Sudras. Other fisher classes include the Kaivartas and Mahisyas. In 1071-72 Kaivarta farmers rebelled against Mahipala II and set up an independent Kaivarta kingdom. At present the Dhivar use the surnames Malo, Barman, Rajbangshi and Das. Apart from their traditional occupation, modern-day Dhivars also take up other jobs or trades.
