a letter to sri ramchandra guha

sir guha,
ashakori bhalo aachen.
i have just read your article on the 16th june telegraph, '11. we are a ardent fan of your writing style. it is by far the best writing ever i have read on the current rambabayanleela series. thanks for putting light the capitalist mania engulfed in the so called national media.
don't you feel that the same logic can be said in your patronage of Rammohun in your recent book makers of modern india. once upon a time my parents was a cpi card holder - they left party and joined UCPI & branded as revisionist among their peers. please don't brand me as bjp worker nor a sympathizer of the sangh parivar philosophy, nor even a Marxist when i trying put the cause of the mass to you.  we humbly work to learn and document the knowledge, livelihood process from  the most knowledgeable people of our country, the village people, who do not understand english, although use to posses technical knowledge they produced throughout thousands of years.
we are running a blog on the knowledge systems of the people we tried forgot at http://lokfolk.blogspot.com, started with english posts and then turned mostly in bengla, as we want to communicate with these people; not the enlightened ones beyond the villages like the subalterns who undertook english as their mother tongue. no urbanites like to speak & write in their mother tongue.
i am not good at english like other fellow bangali.
i do not apologetic about it. i do not know santhali nor thousands of indian languages like your mother tongue kannadi(hope i could write proper spelling, if i am wrong, correct me, i will be obliged). i apologize for this alienation. we have written a piece in bengali pls go through the link http://lokfolk.blogspot.com/2011/02/blog-post.html. someone said you can read bengali as well.  We should hold our luck as the advertisement says. pls go through that. if you don't i know bengali script, you have bengali friend in media. i am not sure if they can read bengali script as the english.
guhaji, in this piece we will try to present stalwarts like rammohon, dwarakanath & vidyasagar in a different pov, at a nutshell and then to present the adam's education report of bengal(1836-38) which says there are at least 1,00,000 schools in the then villages of bengal & bihar where dome, chandal, brahmin & kayasthas use to learn side by side and worked as teacher.
god of the indian urbanites, rammohon worked with the british to destroy traditional indian values and injecting alien ideas sponsored by them, then the majority village people of bengal & india fought vehemently against the company loot, tyranny & against the planned annihilation of the industrial, social & economic infrastructures, still today he is called the father of modern india. he agitated with the british colonist to extend the right to buy land in india. it was happened in 1833. then the banned slave traders put their foot in india, bought land, became zaminders and acted as a brutal indigo planters, to brake the agrarian cycles and infrastructure & backbone of the villagers, still rammohon become the forerunner of modernity in india.
as a renowned historian you may know, when the british sponsored renaissance happening under the guidance of deputy govornor bard and the chief justice of supreme court edward rayan,  at the doorstep of kolkata, with wine in one hand and bible in other, spending night at the brothel,  bengali middleclasses finding ample looting opportunities throughout the country, awarded fat pay packet  jobs and middlemenship for working with the british raj. aginst this scenario, most of the villagers from 1763 onwards fighting british military vehemently for total independence. urban bengalies became deaf.
no one even dwarakanath, ardent follower of rammohon, an indigo and opium producing zaminder, opium clipper holder,( as well as rammohun who worked as a dewan or the collector of taxes of a bengal district and called the champion of humankind, saluted the french tri colour but helped to destroy the rayots of bengal & india) did not support the villagers upsurge.
nil darpan famed dinabandhu mitra(showed public sympathy on zaminders & brahmins against the british police in his play) awarded raibahadur on his last days. it was said, when he was working as a post master general in assam, he passed some valuable information on the movements of the fighting kukis aginst the british and thus he earned this title.
even the marxists came to his rescue. the then communitst party of india, 1957, 190 year after the palassy chokranto,  under the guidance of p c joshi published a book on, notes on bengali renaissance not directly supporting  the struggle of the pasents and craftspersons against the british rule.  toeing with party line susobhsn sarkar has to support rammohon's anti people steps gingerly.
this is the utter betray of the left-centre-right middleclass towards the villagers. we can pileup information after information on the betrayal of the urban english speaking bengalies like us. i do  feel the bloodbath started by our forefathers still remain in my british shirt(though i use to clad kurta - that is not very clean too, the remains of the blood spilled in my skin too. i can feel that smell of fresh hot spilled blood).
i am writing a book on this subject. in bangla. when the villagers are fighting with the british, the calcutta babus are working with the company, earning handsome profits, bagging jobs from their masters or working as a middlemen with the british agency houses to trade indigo, salt or opium.
nor even after the 60 years of independence, no one tries to remember the fighters. it is the perception of the general people that people of india regarded british as their savior, and no one fought the british before 1857. this is an utter lie.  even historian like you forgot titumir, dudmiyan, pyarisundari, biswanath, balai sarkar, garo, kuki chakma, nayek, malangi, payik, hati kheda upsurge leaders, still working as a patron of middleclass bhadrolok bangalis. the villagers just rejected the notion of modernity sponsored by the west to destroy knowledge and vast infrastructures built through thousands of years  by these nameless people.
we have forgot the notion of element education for all sponsored by the village bengali-bihari communities. william adam a closed friend of rammohon, presented a education report named

Reports on the State of Education in Bengal 1836 and 1838. It consists of three reports: the first, dated 1st July 1836, being a survey of the available existing information regarding indigenous
education and its nature and facilities in the various districts of Bengal ; the second, dated 23 December 1835, being a survey of the prevalent situation undertaken by W. Adam in the
Thana of Nattore in the district of Rajshahy; and the third, dated 28 April 1838, being a survey of the situation in parts of Murshedabad, and the whole of the districts of Beerbhoom, Burdwan, South Behar and Tirhoot, ending with Adam’s reflections, recommendations and conclusions.
adam saw at least 1 lakh schools in 1.5 lakh vilages of bengla & bihar. even he recorded the practice of inaucculation aginst small- pox in natore district.
dharampalji wrote, The first striking point from this broader survey is the wide social strata to which both the taught and the teachers in the  elementary schools belonged. It is true that the greater proportion of the teachers came from the Kayasthas, Brahmins, Sadgop and Aguri castes. Yet, quite a number came from 30 other caste groups also, and even the Chandals had 6 teachers. The elementary school students present an even greater variety, and it seems as if every caste group is represented in the student population, the Brahmins and the Kayasthas nowhere forming more than 40% of the total. In the two Bihar districts, together they formed no more than 15 to 16%. The more surprising figure is of 61 Dom, and 61 Chandal school students in the district of
Burdwan, nearly equal to the number of Vaidya students, 126, in that district. While Burdwan had 13 missionary schools, the number of Dom and Chandal scholars in them were only four; and, as Adam mentioned, only 86 of the ‘scholars belonging to 16 of the lowest castes’ were in these missionary schools, while 67 scholars from them were in the ‘native schools’.
though rammohon being the closest friend of adam, he and later vidyasagar ignored the education for all policy of the rural bangal communities and preached education is for the few who could afford and eventually destroying this massive infrastructures to betray the village masses.
can you hear us sri guhan? we are waiting for your cordial reply. if you can reply we will be obliged and enlightened.  help us to find out proper path.
